Chapter Nine

Izzy

“I don’t understand why you lied to me, Izzy.”

Chase’s accusation rang loud and clear in her ear. Izzy’s heart sank to hear him so distraught. She had to admit, between the two of them, she was definitely more at fault. All Chase had wanted to do was share the good news about their engagement. His excitement may have prompted him to speak too soon, but he hadn’t done so with bad intentions. In fact, he wanted to clear the air and dispel the rumors going around on social media.

She, on the other hand, had chosen the complete opposite route. She’d been operating the only way she knew how, the way she’d been so used to dealing with problems—on her own. But she wasn’t alone anymore. She was part of something bigger than herself, and she needed to start thinking and making decisions with Chase in mind.

“I’m so sorry, Chase. You have every right to be mad.” Izzy’s voice broke with regret. She slumped against the kitchen counter where she was standing, her head hung low. “I should never have kept it from you.”

“So …” he stated with hesitation, “there is something going on between you two?”

She jerked her head up, shaking it adamantly. “Oh goodness, no! When I said you ought to be mad, I didn’t mean mad as in crazy! Because that is crazy thinking. Why would you say such a thing?”

“It’s just that you were being so secretive about our engagement. You even took off your ring.”

“I explained that to you.” She lowered her voice in case Wade and Gracie hadn’t left for the market yet. “I didn’t want him to take advantage of your financial situation.”

“Okay, you did say that,” he conceded. “But you mean our financial situation, don’t you? What’s mine is yours. You know that, right?”

A lump formed in Izzy’s throat. With the sleeve of her wool sweater, she wiped away a tear from the corner of her eye. Chase’s words gave her the reassurance she needed. He was fully committed, financially and, most of all, emotionally. She had no doubt where he stood. “Yes, I do. I feel the same way, too. We’re in this together.”

“Thanks. I really needed to hear that.” He paused then cleared his throat. “I have to ask though. Why do you let Wade call you Bella? You didn’t want me to use that nickname, but it’s okay for him to?”

Chase’s comment was so absurd, Izzy almost laughed out loud. She could understand how he may have read the situation wrong. “No, Chase, most definitely not. I’ve told him over and over again not to call me that. I just mentioned it earlier today in fact. Gracie can vouch for me; she was there.”

“I believe you, Izzy. I just wondered if that was a special name he gave you when you were dating.”

“No, it wasn’t. It was the name my dad called me.”

“Oh, I had no idea.”

Izzy swallowed past the lump growing in her throat. “I miss him so much; it still hurts to talk about him.
